Demodex folliculorum is a microscopic and, most of the time, harmless mite, that lives on humans; it's found on the face, including the eyelids and eyelashes, in or around hair follicles, feeding on the dead skin cells, oils and hormones that build up there. It's considered an example of “Commensalism”.

However, large numbers of this mite, and sometimes a co-occurring weakened immune system, can contribute to facial dermatitis and blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids, image below).
Also, some studies found that a person affected by rosacea, can sometimes have four times more Demodex mites on their face than someone without the condition.
